Large Confederate flag in Stafford County to stay up after opponent's appeal dismissed

An 80-foot-high Confederate flag that flies nearby Interstate 95 will continue to fly in Stafford County after the Board of Zoning Appeals dismissed a complaint made against the controversial flag.

There has been strong opposition to the flag over the years, which has been hanging on a private property nearby the highway since 2014. Efforts to get the Confederate flag to come down have failed as the flag is protected by free speech.

After a two-hour hearing Tuesday night, the Board of Zoning Appeals ruled "they did not have jurisdiction to hear the case because the two appellants were not 'aggrieved' under Virginia law."
