Interstate 95 express lanes extension coming to Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. - Interstate 95 will see 10 more miles of express lanes added after Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced a deal was reached on an expansion.

The deal struck between Virginia and Transurban will add 10 miles of express lanes between Route 610 to Route 17, which is expected to help alleviate traffic between Stafford and Fredericksburg, a notorious hot spot for traffic. The move should also impact drivers traveling between the District and Richmond.

The initiative, which officials said would not require any upfront taxpayer investment, has been expanded to include the northbound Rappahannock River Crossing. McAuliffe's office said the crossing was a high priority for the Fredericksburg region.

Officials said construction was slated to begin in the spring of 2019 and expected to be completed in 2022. In 2022, the 95 corridor from the Potomac River to Fredericksburg will be upgraded, according to officials.
