Fire crews battle flames at three Montgomery County homes in cold temps

- Fire crews in Montgomery County say they are investigating after three single-family homes caught fire in the county since Saturday night. There have been five over the weekend for the county.

There were two fires Saturday night -- one happened at around 7 p.m. at 1094 Earlsgate Lane in Rockville, as well as a fire the 10900 block of Larkmeade Lane in Potomac at around 8:30 p.m.

Montgomery County Fire spokesman Pete Piringer says the Larkmeade Lane may have about a million dollars in damage after a fire destroyed the large single-family home Saturday night.

Piringer says about 75 firefighters were brought in to contain the blaze. He says the fire was heavy on the first and second floors and fire crews had to be on watch as some walls in the building collapsed. However, no injuries were reported, according to investigators, and the cause is under investigation.

A fire in a home in Darnestown on Dodie Terrace displaced a family of two adults and two children, as about 75 firefighters worked to contain the flames that started in the chimney and had extended to the attic and roof. Two cats were missing but were later found.

Fire investigators also say there was a basement fire on Earlsgate Lane. There were no injuries, but around 75 firefighters were called to the scene. Two people were displaced.
