Police are investigating after they say a person was struck and killed by a train in Gaithersburg.

Montgomery County police say a pedestrian struck by a train near South Summit Ave and Wells Avenue near the Gaithersburg Community Museum at around 2 p.m on Tuesday.

Police say a person was on the tracks when he was struck by an eastbound Amtrak passenger train. Investigators say fire and rescue crews responded to the struck pedestrian, but the victim died from his injuries at the scene. Police say they haven't yet determined why the person was on the tracks.

CSX railroad tracks are closed between Germantown and Rockville. Rail service for MARC, AMTRAK, and CSX trains between Rockville and all points north are suspended due to a rail incident near the Gaithersburg train station. Trains are being held at Rockville until the rails have been reopened.
