Fallen trees causing storm damage across DC region

WASHINGTON - The continuing downpour in the D.C. area has led to several large trees to come down and damaging homes and bringing down wires on Friday.

South Chelsea Lane in Bethesda, Maryland, has been blocked off after a tree toppled over from one resident's property onto a neighboring house. The family was not at home at the time, but has been displaced as the damage was significant and it could be several weeks before they are able to return home.

Power lines were also impacted along with a car parked in the driveway.

"We have had a few of these in the neighborhood before," said neighbor Betsy Shaw. "That is the closest one to our house, but there was one a block from here a couple of years ago. Our neighbor and friend had it happen during the wind storm. These big trees are scary."

In Takoma Park, Maryland, a large tree fell on a house in the 8000 block of Maple Avenue. The homeowner who was inside the home said he is very thankful no one was injured. He told FOX 5 that neighbors have already offered him a place to stay as the home has been declared unsafe to occupy.

A driver traveling on northbound Interstate 270 was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after a tree struck their vehicle before the Old Georgetown Road and Rockledge Drive exit.

Several other areas in Montgomery County had trees fall down:

- A bicyclist was injured after colliding with a tree at Maryland Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard in Bethesda.
- Several wires came down after a tree fell in the 9400 block of Riley Place in Silver Spring. The road was closed in the area.
- A tree pulled down wires blocked the roadway at Tucker Lane and Ashton Road in Ashton, Va.
- Wallhonding Road and Mohican Road in Bethesda had debris block streets in the area due to fallen trees.

A person was transported to the hospital in stable condition with a minor injury after a large tree fell on a house in the 2100 block of N. Vernon Street in Arlington, Virginia.

Seminary Road at Quaker Lane was shut down due to a large tree that blocked the roadway.

A freight train struck a tree nearby Leeland Road in Fredericksburg, Virginia, resulting in track congestion, according to Virginia Railway Express (VRE).
