Fairfax man charged with murder in deadly hit-and-run of elderly woman

- A Fairfax man charged for the hit-and-run death of a 75-year-old woman is now facing a murder charge after being indicted by a grand jury.

Fairfax County police say 32-year-old Kenan Ozcan struck Maria Amaya de Ascencio with his car as she was attempting to cross Rugby Road (Route 50) in Fairfax on the morning of April 14. According to investigators, Ozcan turned his vehicle around and ran the victim over a second time.

Ascencio was pronounced dead at the scene.

More than two hours later, police say they received a call from a woman at a shopping center on Fair Ridge Drive about a man who was "acting strangely." Police say the woman took a photo of the man, who was later identified as Ozcan. He became agitated, assaulted the woman and went into a nearby business.

Officers took Ozcan into custody and investigators later found that he was involved in the hit-and-run after finding front-end damage to his car. He was initially charged with felony hit-and-run after his arrest in April.

Ascencio moved to the United States from El Salvador 20 years ago and left behind three children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. According to her family, the 75-year-old woman loved her family and loved taking morning walks in her Fair Oaks neighborhood.

Police say it does not appear Ozcan and Ascencio knew each other.

Ozcan remains held at the Adult Detention Center without bond, police say.
