Extreme heat: Scorching temperatures across DC region could push heat index as high as 110 degrees

WASHINGTON (FOX 5 DC) - The scorching temperatures across the D.C. region will be in the mid-to-upper 90s on Wednesday but it will feel even hotter as sweltering heat and humidity could push heat index values to as high as 110 degrees.

A Heat Advisory has been issued for the D.C. area from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday. FOX 5's Michelle Rotella says the extreme temperatures will have a grip on our area until early next week.

The weather service says people spending time outdoors should drink plenty of fluids and avoid direct sunshine. Warnings have also been issued against leaving children or pets inside vehicles. In the District, Mayor Bowser has extended the hours of some pools and spray parks through Sunday, July 21. She also announced that low-barrier shelters will be open continuously through Sunday.

There is a chance for severe thunderstorms later during the evening hours Wednesday which could bring some heavy rain, wind gusts and flooding concerns. There is no relief from the heat in sight this weekend as high temperatures could reach 100 degrees on Saturday and 98 degrees on Sunday.
