DC shelter rescues 19 dogs from Tropical Storm Barry

WASHINGTON (FOX 5 DC) - Nearly 20 rescue dogs evacuated out of Louisiana because of Hurricane Barry are now up for adoption here in D.C.

The Humane Rescue Alliance says it took in 54 rescue dogs from Louisiana shelters in advance of the hurricane hitting the Gulf Coast.

The group now has 19 of those dogs available at its shelter located at 71 Oglethorpe St. NW. The rest of the dogs went to St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center in New Jersey.

"We are proud to assist our fellow shelters in Louisiana and provide a safe haven for the animals as the region prepares for potentially devastating storms," Lisa LaFontaine, President and CEO of the group, said in a statement. "As we head into hurricane season, the Humane Rescue Alliance and St. Hubert's stand ready to take in homeless animals in the path of natural disasters with open arms and find loving homes for them in the region."
