DC residents to face fines for not shoveling snow, ice

Winter is coming, bringing snow and ice with it. But for D.C. residents, it could also bring $25 fines.

In a statement posted online, DDOT announced that property owners who fail to clear snow and ice from sidewalks, handicap ramps and steps abutting their property within eight daylight hours after the inclement weather ends will be sued for the cost of clearing the snow or ice plus a $25 fine.

Property owners are also asked to clear snow and ice from catch basins and storm drains to prevent flooding during snow melt.

Renters should check with landlords and review lease terms to see who is responsible for snow clearing at their property.
