Longtime DC radio host Ed Walker dies at 83

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Ed Walker, a radio host who was heard for decades on Washington's WAMU-FM, has died. He was 83.

WAMU program director Lettie Holman says Walker died early Monday morning.

For the past 25 years, Walker had hosted a program called "The Big Broadcast" that aired on Sunday nights. He died a few hours after his final show aired on Sunday. He had taped the show on Oct. 12 from his hospital bed. Walker had been suffering from cancer.

Walker was born blind. As a student at American University in 1950, he was one of the founders of the then-campus radio station WAMU. In the 1950s and 60s, he co-hosted a comedy program called "The Joy Boys" with Willard Scott, who later became famous for his work on the "Today" show.
