DC offers rewards for illegal ATVs, dirt bikes

WASHINGTON - D.C. Police are launching a campaign they hope will rid city streets of ATVs and dirt bikes.

The program, called 'Bonus to Phone Us: Off Road,' will pay $250 for tips that lead to the confiscation of the vehicles.

Police say tipsters should have a description of the vehicle, its operator, and the location where it is being driven.

If tips lead to police successfully removing an ATV or dirt bike from the street, the caller will be issued a tip tracking number and they will be eligible for the reward.

Authorities say tipsters can call 202-727-9099 with tips.

Illegal dirt bikes have been connected to several crimes that have occurred in the District since the start of the year.

In May, reporter Charnice Milton was gunned down in the southeast by a suspect who escaped on a dirt bike.

Tamara Gliss, a 31-year-old mother, was killed in a shooting in the Shaw neighborhood on Memorial Day. The suspect in this case was last seen on a dirt bike.

In June, a police officer's wife was knocked down, spit on and assaulted by ATV and dirt bike riders in the southeast.

Videos have also surfaced of illegal dirt bike riders taunting D.C. police officers.
