Daytime attack on mother, baby in Georgetown leaves residents concerned

A string of unusual violent attacks in Georgetown has left many neighbors and residents shocked. One incident involved a mother who was putting her child in a car seat Monday morning.

The victim said she parked her car at the corner of 33rd Street and Wisconsin Avenue at 10:30 a.m. when a gang of teenagers, for no known reason, surrounded her SUV.

She said she turned and saw more teenagers coming toward her, so she locked the door and quickly ran around the other side.

The mother said she outmaneuvered these guys, ran around, got in the vehicle, forced one of the boys back out of her car and then locked it.

With her car surrounded, the victim tried desperately to get out of the parking spot.

But before she could get away with her daughter, one of the suspects jumped on the roof of her car, took a rock and smashed open her sunroof.

The mom blared her horn and the teenagers ran away. The glass from her crushed sunroof can still be seen on the street here.

Wavely Veney told us there have been a string of robberies recently on this block. He said his Vespa was stolen on Monday evening. He has lived here for almost ten years.

"I haven't seen anything quite this close to home on this particular block," he said. "It's something that is new. It's a little scary. Lock your doors and just keep your eyes open."

Mike Collins lives around the corner from where the incident occurred. He said the news rocked his family.

"We're looking actually in a number of self-defense classes, martial arts, but also considering buying a gun because you never know," he told us.

The victim asked us not to use her name because she is terrified of retaliation.

We asked a police spokesman about the suspects in the case. He would only say the case remains under investigation and anyone with information should call the police.
