Charles County daycare drowning: 2-year-old boy drowns at daycare in Waldorf, officials say

A 2-year-old boy drowned in a pool at a daycare in Charles County, according to authorities.

The Charles County Sheriff's Department said they responded to the 3600 block of Yorktown Drive where the child was found unresponsive.

Officials said the woman who was running the licensed daycare was making breakfast for three children when she realized one was missing.

The home has a door that leads to a deck that has an above-ground pool. Detectives said the boy likely opened the door and fell into the pool.

The boy was rushed to the hospital where he was later pronounced deceased, authorities stated.

"I can't imagine a worse situation for a parent," Capt. Stephen Salvas with the Charles County Sheriff's Department said. "To drop off a child, and he's fine, and get a frantic call like this. I think it's a parent's worst nightmare and I feel for everyone involved. It sounds like a horrible accident."

The sheriff's department said the boy's death is currently under investigation.
