Building taller than Washington Monument planned for Tysons Corner

- Developers are preparing to break ground in Tysons Corner on a building that would be taller than the Washington Monument.

The development, being led by Clemente Development Company – the developer behind The View in Tysons Corner, would include a 600-feet tall art and entertainment themed building with residential living, business offices and a 47,000 square foot performing arts center with two theaters.

“This building will be the tallest structure between Philadelphia and Charlotte, North Carolina,” said Costantino Daniel Clemente, the CEO of the Clemente Development Company.

While developers look to the future, others are pointing to current and past businesses being forced out to make space for the massive building. Hany Guirgus said he’s preparing to close Mina Design Gallery in the coming weeks as his building will be destroyed to make way for the new structure along Leesburg Pike.

“You know Tysons Corner is completely changing,” Guirgus said. “We got a short notice almost a month and a half ago that we have to be out by the end of June.”

With traffic already heavily congested in the area, some residents have raised concerns about the possible impact the building could have on traffic in Tysons Corner.

Officials said before the construction, there were reportedly 12,000 residents in Tysons Corner but 100,000 people working in the area.

Clemente believes giving people the option to live in Tysons Corner will ultimately minimize traffic in the long run.

“We believe in the idea that you work, live and play in the same place and so as Tysons grows and as residential becomes available at Tysons you will see easing up on all that,” Clemente explained. “When the burrow is finished, you’ll start to see traffic going down.”

FOX 5 reached out to the county for comment and a spokesperson released the following statement: “The applicant, Tysons Development, LLC, is currently amending the View at Tysons application (RZ 2017-PR-010.) This amended application has not yet been accepted for review. Consequently, county staff has not seen the revised site layout. Once the amended application is reviewed we can provide additional information.”
