Police arrest suspect in murder along popular Md. trail

FOX 5's Emily Miller reports.

- Prince George’s County police arrested a suspect in connection with the first homicide of the year in the county.

A jogger found the body of Catherine Alvarado, 20, along the Northwest Branch Trail in Hyattsville on New Year’s Day. Police have arrested 18-year-old Marvin Vazquez-Juarez, a man who they said was formerly in a romantic relationship with the victim.

Police said Alvarado, who was reported missing on New Year's Eve, was stabbed and pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities were able to close the case in two weeks.

“This is a quick turnaround. Our detectives work very hard around the clock to solve these cases. It makes us feel pretty good to bring comfort to the families for something like this, especially when you have a victim that was so young,” said Cpl. Nicole Hubbard of the Prince George’s County Police Department.

Prince George’s County police have a domestic violence unit and encourage anyone who is in a relationship that might be violent to call them for help. The number is 301-772-4433.
