Va. business offers childcare while you work

- Figuring out how to be the kind of parent you want to be and still earning an income is a real dilemma for many parents.

Now, one Virginia woman has come up with a business designed to help solve that problem by creating a space where children can play and their parents can work.

It’s called “Play, Work or Dash” and it’s the first of its kind in our area. The Vienna-based company provides people to watch your children while you work or run out for a meeting.

You can pay as you go or sign up for a membership, but there are no long-term contracts required.

Deanna Heier dropped little Sam off in the play area Tuesday and headed upstairs to the collaborative workspace to begin her job as a part-time medical education consultant.

It doesn’t take long for Sam to happily get used to the new environment, freeing up his mother to work without worry and still check in on her son in person or on camera whenever she wants.

“At home it was really hard to schedule calls and get enough time to work in between naps, and it just wasn't reliable enough,” said Heier. “I'm able to go back part-time now with a job that I loved and still spend time with my sons.”

On this day, Laci Tang shared the workspace as her 9-month-old Phoenix was downstairs.

“What can you do here that you can’t do at home?” asked FOX 5’s Jennifer Davis.

“Concentrate. Focus. Complete one task when I start it,” said Tang.

The innovative environment is the brainchild of Nicole Dash, who ran an in-home daycare for the last 10 years before realizing there was a better way to help families work and parent.

“This is kind of answering the problem that I feel like exists out there on how to be able to do both and be able to focus on your family and focus on your entrepreneurial or business goals for yourself while not sacrificing your idea of parenthood,” Dash said.

There’s meeting space, workspace and a conference room for adults, and the daycare hosts children up to 8 years old for as many as three hours a day.

Dash said the business has only been open for a short time and is already doing well.
