A D.C. woman was shot by a police officer Saturday night in northeast Washington. Officers were initially called to the scene to assist firefighters, who were battling a house fire, but investigators say the woman began threatening the officers with a knife and refused to drop her weapon.

The shooting happened near 53rd Street NE and Clay Terrace NE. The incident was captured on video by witnesses. Police say the woman repeatedly ignored commands to drop the knife she was carrying as she approached the officer, who eventually shot her.

On Sunday, police identified the woman as Renita Nettles, and she is accused of starting the house fire that led to the initial call to authorities. She remains hospitalized and was listed in stable condition.

Nettles is charged with assault on a police officer, assault with a deadly weapon, and arson.

The officer who shot Nettles is on routine administrative leave, and he has not been identified.
