Man hit, killed by SUV in Germantown, police say

- A man was hit and killed by an SUV in Germantown on Tuesday, according to authorities.

Montgomery County Police said the pedestrian was struck at Great Seneca Highway and Middlebrook Road at about 10:45 a.m.

Investigators said a Toyota SUV traveling westbound on Middlebrook Road struck the pedestrian, who appeared to be standing in the median.

The pedestrian, only identified as a man in his 60s, was believed to be a panhandler, according to witnesses.

"It's just a shame that this had to happen right in front of my house. It's just crazy," neighbor Ben Frankoh said.

Authorities said after the Toyota then hit a Ford SUV before traveling another 50 yards, carrying the pedestrian until it came to a stop. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

The drivers of the Toyota and Ford were taken to the hospital and are expected to survive their injuries.

The intersection of Great Seneca Highway and Middlebrook Road was closed as police investigated. The cause of the crash was still under investigation.
