Noose found in Montgomery Village neighborhood

- A noose was found hanging in a tree in a Montgomery County neighborhood Thursday morning. It is the latest in a string of recent noose-related incidents around the D.C. region.

The latest noose discovery was made at around 8 a.m. Thursday on Mills Choice Road in the Heron’s Cove Condominium neighborhood in Montgomery Village as parents were heading to work or taking their kids to school.

The synthetic rope noose was found hanging in a tree near the neighborhood parking lot. Condo management was called and Montgomery County police cut the noose down.

Monica Moore spotted the noose as she was helping get her children to school.

“I was upset,” she said. “I couldn’t do nothing because the only thing I could do is look at my babies. They have to live in this area and it's sad.”

Another resident named Gina lives in the building closest to the tree where the noose was found. So upset and worried, she cried telling us about the conversation she was forced to have with her daughter.

“This really hurts because my 13-year-old daughter saw that and she said, ‘What is this?’” Gina said. “She doesn’t understand why they are doing that. I don't want to explain it to her because I told her there is a lot of hate out here, but don’t get it wrong. A lot of people that are white do not hate you.”

Montgomery County police are investigating the incident, but do not know who put the noose up at this point.

“This was very racist and it was wrong,” said Gina. “Like I said, I got to get my baby out of here. I'm not comfortable anymore.”

This latest incident comes after nooses were found over the past few months inside the National Museum of African American History and Culture, outside of the Hirshhorn Museum, on the campus of American University, inside a fraternity house at the University of Maryland, at a D.C. home under construction and at a middle school in Anne Arundel County in Maryland.
