Police search for suspect after shooting in Alexandria apartment building

- Fairfax County police are searching for a man who was reportedly knocking on doors in an Alexandria apartment building early Sunday morning before becoming involved a struggle with a resident—which ended in gunfire.

Just before 1:30 am, officers were called to the apartment building, which is located in the 3500 block of South George Mason Drive. A man had reportedly been shouting and knocking on doors in the hallway.

Police say a resident of the building woke up to find the man inside of his apartment. The 27-year-old victim grabbed his gun and confronted the suspect, and a struggle ensued. Investigators say the suspect at some point got control of the gun, and it was discharged. The resident was struck twice, and was later taken to George Washington University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police are still searching for the suspect, who is described as a white man who is about 6 feet tall with blue eyes and a prominent nose. He was wearing dark-colored clothing at the time of the incident.

Investigators found the gun at the scene, and say they don’t believe there is any threat to the public.
