Officer-involved shooting injures man in southeast DC

- A man was injured late Friday night after being shot by a police officer in southeast Washington.

The incident began when plain clothes officers with MPD's Gun Recovery Unit were called to the 900 block of Whaler Place for sounds and gunshots. When they arrived, a male suspect fled the scene. While in pursuit of the suspect, a firearm was brandished and the officer fired his weapon, striking the suspect.

The suspect sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital where he remains in critical condition.

The suspect’s loaded firearm was recovered on scene and he will be charged with Assault on a Police Officer. The officer involved in this incident has been placed on administrative leave.

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Internal Affairs Bureau responded to the scene and will be responsible for the investigation. Since the officer involved is assigned to the Gun Recovery Unit, a plain clothes tactical team that is used to interdict illegal firearms, there was no body worn camera footage that captured the incident.
