A police standoff has ended peacefully after two men barricaded themselves in a Southeast D.C. apartment building for hours on Thursday.

D.C. police said they tried to stop three suspects in a car after responding to reports of shots fired. But when the car pulled over, the suspects jumped out. One suspect got away on foot.

Police say two others barricaded themselves in an apartment.

Police and the SWAT team tried to negotiate with the men to come out. Part of the concern was that other people were in building where the men were barricaded near South Capitol Street and Danbury Street.

Hours later, several residents were escorted out of the building.

Then one of the suspects was brought out of the building in handcuffs. But police continued to negotiate with the other suspect inside the building.

More than three hours after the standoff began, things finally came to a peaceful end.

People in this neighborhood said they are worried for their safety and there has been a lot of violence in the area, including several homicides in recent weeks.
