Two pedestrians were hit by a car before it crashed nearby in the parking lot at a Bethesda church Saturday afternoon, police say.

Officials responded to the River Road Unitarian Universalist Congregation in the 6300 block of River Road between Wittier Boulevard and Braeburn Parkway at about 4:30 p.m.

The victims, a man and a woman, both 86-year-old, suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries and were transported to a local trauma center.

Police had to close some roads in the area for the investigation.
