2 Ballou High School students arrested after fight breaks out

WASHINGTON - Two students have been arrested after a fight broke out at Ballou High School in Southeast D.C.

FOX 5 News was the only station there when police responded to the brawl. A student was arrested and escorted off school property in handcuffs moments after we arrived on campus.

Ron Harlan is a contractor and was doing some work inside the school when the fight erupted.

"A little nervous so we're getting out of here," he told us. "I'm not sure exactly what happened, but it doesn't sound like it was a fun time."

Harlan heard the fight, but never saw the altercation. Even so, that was enough for him.

"Any time I come up here, I feel like I'm in danger, but that's anywhere," said Harlan. "As far as a solution goes, that's a long conversation."

Ubol Bell's wife is a new security officer at Ballou.

"A lot of stuff goes on at the school almost every other day," he said. "The fact is that young kids these days, they have no clue, no idea, no remorse for other people. They get into a fight or whatever the case is, they just don't care."

Police say the fight broke out between two students and officers were called shortly after 3 p.m. More than an hour later, police were still there.

"I got a whole bunch of mixed messages," said Sherrele Francis. "I didn't really get one answer. I asked the cops. They weren't interested in answering me. They weren't interested in helping me, so I don't know what happened."

The brawl reportedly attracted an out-of-control crowd and the aftermath sparked concern for plenty of parents, including Francis, whose 15-year-old daughter is a freshman at the school.

The two students arrested were each charged with a misdemeanor simple assault.

It remains unknown what sparked the clash between the two students.

There were no injuries.
