Police arrest suspect in shooting death of 68-year-old man

- Prince George's County Police have arrested a suspect in the murder 68-year-old Alonzo Jackson, announcing it as Jackson's family and friends gathered for a vigil Sunday evening.

Jackson, a father and grandfather who worked for 30 years at Safeway, was shot July 20 during a carjacking at a gas station in the 4900 block of Marlboro Pike. He died several hours later at a nearby hospital.

Police said a tip led them to arrest 20-year-old Demarko Wheeler who is now charged with first-degree murder.

"When you approached my husband, if you would have taken the time to have a conversation with him for 30 seconds, you would have known that he was not the type of person you would have killed. If you had given him 30 seconds, it could have also been your breakthrough to turn your life around from crime. You have no idea the pain you have caused me, my family, friends, and this community. We expect justice to be served.  And maybe one day we will forgive you. May God have mercy on your soul," said Theis.

Family found about the arrest earlier in the day, and announced the news after police went public during the vigil.

"We're just happy someone got caught," said Jackson's son, Lamont Jackson. "We hope justice will be served. And I'd just like to thank all of the Prince Georges County officers. The ones that we don't know, the ones we haven't seen that were hard at work in the background. Considering what's going on in today's world, we just want to thank them all."
