Police: 15-year-old girl charged with murder in attack, deadly hit-and-run of man in Aspen Hill

ASPEN HILL, Md. - A 15-year-old Montgomery County girl has been charged as an adult in a vicious attack on a disabled man.

Ashley Bonilla, 17-year-old Mohammed Salous and 21-year-old Kenneth Kpakima are accused of robbing and beating a man with rocks and sticks before he was run over by a car on Georgia Avenue in Aspen Hill during the early morning hours of June 8.

"They robbed him, they assaulted him, he fell backward into a wooded area," said Montgomery County Police Sgt. Rebecca Innocenti. "The two male suspects continued to follow him, assaulted him in the wooded area. They watched as he crawled out of the woods. He went into the roadway where he lay motionless. The three suspects watched as he got run over by one vehicle and then they fled from the area."

According to police and prosecutors, Bonilla, Salous and Kpakima noticed 40-year-old Gregory Atwood appear to be intoxicated as he walked along Hewitt Avenue.

They first stole Atwood's backpack before going off to steal from cars. Prosecutors said the suspects then came back as the victim offered money and alcohol for the return of his backpack.

Instead, prosecutors said the three went into the woods off of Georgia Avenue where they used sticks, rocks and beer cans to beat Atwood. He was able to crawl out of the woods and out onto the southbound lanes of Georgia Avenue where he was run over by a vehicle on the road.

"Collision Reconstruction Unit detectives respond to the scene. We believe this to be a fatal hit-and-run," said Sgt. Innocenti. "Based on their investigation, they believed that something had occurred to this victim before he came in the roadway. And again, they had to explore why he was in the roadway. That is when Major Crimes detectives became involved in this investigation and determined he had been robbed, assaulted before this fatal hit-and-run."

Prosecutors said after watching Atwood get run over by a car, the three suspects all went to McDonald's up the street.

The judge ordered Bonilla held without bond at the adult detention center.

Bonilla has been charged with first-degree murder and armed robbery. Salous was charged as an adult with assault-related offenses and murder for his involvement while Kpakima faces assault and armed robbery offenses related to the crime, police said.

Police are still looking for the two vehicles that struck Atwood -- a light-colored Dodge Durango and a 2011 Dodge Avenger or Chrysler 200. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 240-773-6620.
