Fallen law enforcement officers remembered at DC memorial service

- Family, friends, fellow officers and the police community honored fallen D.C.-area law enforcement officers in a memorial service that is kicking off National Police Memorial Week.

Officers from around the region gathered at the Washington Area Law Enforcement Memorial in front of D.C. police headquarters Monday morning.

The 37th Annual Washington Area Law Enforcement Officers Memorial is held every year to pay tribute to federal, state, and municipal officers who have been killed or disabled in the line of duty.

There have been 124 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in 2015 and there have been 33 so far this year, according to the National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Fund.

People are encouraged to wear blue ribbons as a reminder to honor law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice while in the line of duty.
