Washington Monument closes after another elevator malfunction

- The Washington Monument has closed on Wednesday evening after another elevator malfunction.

The National Park Service said there were no people on the elevator when the malfunction occurred and 23 visitors had to be escorted down the stairs from the observation level.

Technicians completed repairs on the elevator Wednesday night and the monument will reopen at 9 a.m. Thursday.

This comes after the elevator failed on Tuesday night leaving 63 visitors stranded at the top.

Emergency crews responded to the scene at around 9:30 p.m. Visitors were forced to walk down the nearly 900 steps while firefighters assisted two pregnant women out of the monument.

No injuries were reported and officials re-opened the monument to visitors at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

In June of this year, another elevator malfunction closed the Washington Monument for several days.
