10-year-old girl killed in Fauquier County after tree falls on home, officials say

A 10-year-old girl was killed after a tree fell onto her family's home in Fauquier County late Wednesday evening, according to officials.

The Fauquier County Sheriff's Office said the tree fell on the girl's bedroom on the second floor of her family's home in the 6200 block of Highmeadow Place in Warrenton at about 10:25 p.m.

Officials said the girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

"It collapsed at the base onto the structure and then through the roof and ceiling and into the bedroom," Sgt. James Hartman with the Fauquier County Sheriff's Office described. "They tried desperately to free this girl from under this tree and were unable to."

Family and friends identified the girl Lydia Gherghis and said a GoFundMe has been started to help her parents with funeral costs.

It was unclear what exactly caused the tree to fall, but officials have been worried about ground saturation with the heavy rainfall that has swept over the D.C. region recently.
