10 tips to know for your visit to the new African American History Museum during opening weekend

- If you are heading down for the grand opening of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, here are ten things the museum wants you to know to help you make your visit stress-free.

#1: Make sure you have your Timed Pass to get into the museum.

This is required to enter the museum. If you don’t have one, you will have to book one in advance. To reserve a pass, go to: http://event.etix.com/ticket/e/1004039/timed-entry-pass-washington-the-national-museum-of-african-american-history-and-culture

#2: There will not be any same-day passes issued on the first weekend

But same-day passes will be available starting on Monday, Sept. 26.

#3: Proper footwear

Leave those uncomfortable dress shoes at home. Museum officials say wear a nice comfortable pair of shoes during your visit.

#4: Make sure to check on road closures

There are going to be a lot of roads going to be shut down in the area, especially when the dignitaries are here for the grand opening festivities.

For full details on the closures, go to: http://www.fox5dc.com/news/207346717-story

#5: Don’t think about driving

There will not be any on-street parking available this weekend, so it is advised that visitors use public transportation such as Metro or buses.

If you do need to drive, there are commercial parking lots throughout the city and reserved parking that can be purchased ahead of time. For more information, go to: https://nmaahc.si.edu/visit/parking

#6: Give yourself extra time to get to the museum

There will be a lot of security in place near the museum and all visitors will go through security screening, so expect lines and some waiting.

Food, drink, weapons, tripods, signs, pets and selfie sticks are just some of the items prohibited at the museum. For a full list of prohibited items, go to: https://nmaahc.si.edu/items-not-permitted-grand-opening

#7: Watch out for counterfeit passes

Be really careful if you purchased a pass or if someone gives you one. There is a possibility they could be counterfeit and also know that Timed Passes can only be used once.

#8: Wheelchairs are limited

If you have a hard time getting around and you need a wheelchair, the best advice is to bring your own because there is only a limited supply and they will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis.

#9: Download the museum’s apps

The apps will be updating all information throughout the weekend about the museum and the Freedom Sounds Festival. More info on the apps:

#10: Extended museum hours

Don't be too upset if you don't get in right away. Extended hours at the museum will be offered through Oct. 2
