1-year-old child shot in Northeast DC

Police say a 1-year-old boy has been shot in Northeast D.C. Monday night.

D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham says officers responded to the 1300 block of I Street for a shooting in an alley at around 8:50 p.m. Their preliminary investigation found that gunfire was exchanged as a group was gathered outside in the area and the child was wounded at least once in the lower extremities.

The boy was treated by a D.C. Fire and EMS unit that was located nearby the area. He was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition.

Newsham says he does not believe the child was not targeted and it appears he was struck by a stray bullet.

Police are talking to witnesses in the area to try to identify suspects in the shooting, Newsham said.
