Smoke detectors present but no indication they were working, officials say after deadly fire in DC

Officials say a man is dead after fire broke out in an apartment in Southeast, D.C.

The fire was reported around 4 a.m. on the first floor of a three-story apartment building in the 200 block of Oakwood Street.

Firefighters say the victim died at the scene and that the fire was contained to one unit. No other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Vito Maggiolo said smoke detectors were present in the apartment but there was no indication that they were functioning.
