Large egg-like mass removed from man's abdomen

Raymond Thompson had no idea what was lurking inside him.

"I said, 'Wow, that came out of me?'" the 64-year-old exclaimed.

What came out of him was a mass just under four inches long that looks sort of like an egg.

It was actually floating in Thompson's body and doctors say it had been there for many years. It likely began as a piece of fat that broke free and eventually calcified. Over the years, it grew larger and larger.

Dr. Rachael Sussman of MedStar Georgetown University Hospital removed it in what she described as a simple surgery.

It turns out it is the largest mass of its kind ever recorded in medical history.

The mass was removed in 2013, but it is soaring to stardom after being featured in the latest issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The mass is benign and Thompson is doing well.
