The Atlanta Humane Society (AHS) was asked by the state of Georgia to set up and run a temporary emergency shelter for up to 1,000 animals on Friday.

"We received an incredible amount of community support," said Christina Hill with AHS. "Volunteers brought newspapers, towels, and everything we could possibly need."

AHS employees have been working around the clock to move animals to the warehouse, including animals from Florida, coastal Georgia, and mainly Fulton County, where the animal shelter routinely floods when it rains.

So far, 424 dogs and cats are being housed in the 60,000-square-foot building in Roswell. The facility is fully-operational with separate areas for dogs and cats.

Early Tuesday morning, FOX 5's Randy Travis visited the shelter, where a number of volunteers worked overnight in order to care for the animals.

Five-week-old "Cookie" was featured on Good Day Atlanta after arriving at the shelter from Okefenokee. According to Hill, Cookie, his mother and seven siblings were evacuated from a shelter that was about to flood.

AHS said they were prepared to receive more animals post-Irma and will operate the shelter for as long as needed.

"We're not asking for any physical items at this time," Hill said. "But, if anyone wants to support what we're doing here, they can visit atlantahumane.org."
