Giuliani defends Obama comments in op-ed

This follows a controversial statement at an event in New York last week where he said: "I know this is a horrible thing to say, but I do not believe that the president loves America."

The outspoken, one-time republican presidential candidate says he's not attacking president Obama's patriotism, just his policies.

In the Wall Street Journal Monday, Giuliani says he's not questioning the president's motives or the contents of his heart.

What his statement was meant to do, Giuliani says, is to get people to focus on the effects President Obama's words have on the morale of the country.

Giuliani says Obama criticizes and apologizes for the United States more than other presidents have.

His comments were made at a private fundraiser last Wednesday for Wisconsin's Republican Governor Scott Walker – who is considering a run for president.

In his op-ed Monday, Giuliani says the president's personal journey is inspiring and a testament to much of what makes this country great.
