DC mayor's pledge of 'fresh start' enters 2nd year

(AP) -- The "fresh start" that Mayor Muriel Bowser promised the District of Columbia is now a year old, and she's starting her second year on the job the same way she started her first -- with a 5K run.

This year's "Fresh Start 5K" will be held in the Kingman Park neighborhood on Friday morning. The Bowser administration says the event is part of the mayor's commitment to promoting health and wellness. It's open to anyone who wishes to participate.

Bowser also announced this week that the city was eliminating fees for using city fitness centers. Previously, residents had to pay $5 to use equipment including elliptical machines, treadmills and free weights.

Bowser, a Democrat, took office on Jan. 1, 2015.
