Funeral held for firefighter fatally shot in Maryland

A Prince George's County firefighter was laid to rest Wednesday afternoon after he was fatally shot while responding to a welfare check call at a home in Temple Hills.

The funeral for 37-year-old John Ulmschneider was held at St. John's Catholic Parish in Hollywood, Maryland.

Ulmschneider was shot last Friday along with volunteer firefighter Kevin Swain after authorities received a 911 call from the brother of a man who lived at the Temple Hills home concerned his brother was possibly suffering from a medical emergency. Authorities decided to force entry into the home where the homeowner fired his weapon wounding the two firefighters and the homeowner's brother.

Ulmschneider would later die from his injuries at the hospital while the other two shooting victims survived.

Nicknamed "Skillet," Ulmschneider was a 13-year firefighter and paramedic veteran of the Prince George's County Fire and EMS Department. He lived in St. Mary's County and was normally assigned at the Landover Hills Fire/EMS Station 830. He leaves behind a wife and a 2-year-old daughter.
