Fire destroys house in Accokeek

An Accokeek family has been displaced after a large fire gutted their home Monday morning.

Officials say firefighters were alerted to the blaze in the 15400 block of Jamies Way at around 7 a.m.

Prince George's County Fire and EMS spokesperson Mark Brady said the large 2-story house is a total loss as the fire engulfed the entire home for over 90 minutes and caused the first floor to collapse.

Firefighters had to send in several water tankers to the scene as there were no water hydrants in the area nearby the home. The house did have smoke alarms and a residential sprinkler system.

Two people inside the home were able to escape the home safely with two dogs. No injuries were reported.

Brady said the damage to the home is estimated to be $1.5 million.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
