Police say two teens are in critical condition after a car they believe may have been stolen was involved in a serious accident.
The crash happened Sunday night in the 2800 block of Hillcrest Drive in Southeast, D.C.
Officials say the car ran off the road just after 6 p.m. and struck two trees before bursting into flames. Police officers who first arrived were unable to start rescue operations right away because of the fire.
Police say firefighters were able to cut the roof off the Toyota Camry and pull out two passengers who were trapped. A third passenger escaped from the car on his own. Police believe all three people in the car were teenagers.
The two en pulled from the car were rushed to the hospital in critical condition. The third teen was also hospitalized with minor injuries.
Police say it appears the car involved is stolen, because the plates are missing. It's unclear if any charges will be filed. Initial information indicated police may have been chasing the vehicle but authorities say there is no evidence of that at this time.
