Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department mobilizing for deployment to Nepal

 Virginia Task Force 1 (VATF-1), Fairfax County's Urban Search and Rescue Team was activated Saturday in order to assist in the Nepal following a devastating earthquake that shook three countries.
The Fairfax County International Urban Search & Rescue resource, sponsored by the Fairfax County, Virginia Fire and Rescue Department is capable of both domestic and international disaster response.

The Task Force has extensive international (USAR Team 1) and domestic (Virginia Task Force 1) disaster response experience. It is also recognized throughout the United States and the world, as a premier leader in for the provision of training in catastrophic event mitigation, readiness, and response and recovery techniques.

The United States is sending a disaster response team and $1 million in aid to Nepal    The White House and Secretary of State John Kerry are offering condolences along with pledging the support.
The magnitude 7.8 earthquake outside the capital Kathmandu killed more than 1,000 people in Nepal, India and Bangladesh. It also toppled buildings and triggered an avalanche on Mount Everest.
Kerry says in a statement that the United States stands with the people of Nepal and sends heartfelt sympathies.
National Security Council spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan says the U.S. stands ready to provide further assistance in the region.
