Dulles breaks record low temperature, BWI ties record

STERLING, Va. (AP) -- The cold snap that settled in Maryland and the metropolitan Washington is breaking records.

According to the National Weather Service, the low temperature Sunday at Dulles Airport in northern Virginia was 6 degrees at about 7:30 a.m. That breaks the record for the date of 7 degrees set in 1965.

At BWI-Thurgood Marshall Airport outside Baltimore, the low of 6 degrees Sunday matched a record set in 1943.

The cold temperatures were accompanied by heavy winds that plunged wind chill factors, and knocked out power to tens of thousands around the region.

Forecasters said the cold be followed by snowfall of several inches Monday evening throughout the region.
