DC police ID man found dead after gunfire exchange with cops

WASHINGTON (AP) -- District of Columbia police are identifying a robbery suspect they believe fatally shot himself after exchanging gunfire with officers earlier this week.

Metropolitan Police Department on Saturday identified the man as 33 year-old Benjamin Alexander Gwyn of northwest Washington.

Police said previously that officers interrupted a robbery in progress around 11:30 p.m. Thursday in the popular 14th Street corridor of northwest Washington. Police said when officers tried to detain Gwyn, he pulled a gun and began fleeing.

Gwyn and police exchanged gunfire and he was found soon after with a gunshot wound to the head. No officers were injured. Police say preliminary information indicates Gwyn may have turned the gun on himself
