WASHINGTON (AP) — District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser is celebrating the Supreme Court's ruling that will legalize same-sex marriage nationwide.
Bowser issued a statement Friday, saying the court's recognition of same-sex marriage as a right in every state "affirms our democratic values, that each of us is equal."
Same-sex marriage has been legal in the nation's capital since 2010 after legislation was passed by the D.C. Council and signed into law by then-Mayor Adrian Fenty.
Bowser submitted an amicus brief to the Supreme Court this year in support of marriage equality nationwide.
