The heat is on! With temperatures expected to reach the upper 90s Thursday, the District of Columbia and many surrounding counties have opened their cooling centers for those in need.

D.C.

D.C.'s three general cooling centers are in the lobby of the Frank D. Reeves Center at 2000 14th Street, the lobby of the King Office Building on the 3720 Martin Luther King Avenue, and at One Judiciary Square at 441 4th Street. MARYLAND

VIRGINIA

In Virginia, Fairfax County cooling centers will be located in libraries, community centers, and government centers. (FULL LIST)

Alexandria is making available most city recreation centers and libraries as cooling centers (FULL LIST)

Don't get caught off guard! Take the following precautions in the event of extreme heat:

-Stay indoors as much as possible.
-Turn on the air-conditioner or fan.
-DO NOT leave children or pets in vehicles.
-Drink plenty of water.
-Wear light-colored, lightweight and loose-fitting clothes.
-Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before going outside. SPF 15-30 is best.
-Limit exposure to the sun, especially between 10 AM and 3 PM when it is strongest
-Watch for symptoms of heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
