A mother and her 5-month-old child were struck by a vehicle in Leesburg, Va. on Wednesday morning, the baby later died at the hospital.

The accident happened around 8:15 a.m. near the intersection of Riverside Parkway and Kipheart Drive. Police say a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee was turning west onto Riverside Parkway from Coton Manor Drive when a man struck the two while they were crossing the street inside of a marked cross-walk. The boy, who was being pushed by the mother in a stroller, was ejected and thrown to the street . The mother was also thrown back several feet.

Both were transported to a nearby hospital where the baby died from his injuries and the mother is being treated for serious but non-life threatening injuries, according to officials. FOX 5's Bob Barnard says the mother and boy had dropped off an older sibling at school a short time before the accident.

"I am writing this letter with a heavy heart, as I share some very difficult news with our community. One of our parents and their infant child were crossing Riverside Parkway and were struck by a vehicle. Tragically, the infant did not survive the accident. The mother was taken to the hospital," said Garett Brazina, Principle of Seldens Landing Elementary School, where the older child attended.

The vehicle that struck them remained on the scene. Police have not determined a cause for the accident.
