Child dead in crash involving motorcycle in Maryland

Police say a child is dead and others injured in a crash involving a motorcycle and pedestrians in Prince George's County.

The victim is seven-year-old Alejandro Santos of Cherrywood Terrace in Greenbelt.

Prince George's County fire department spokesman Mark Brady says the crash happened Saturday around 4 p.m. in the 3500 block of East West Highway in Hyattsville.

Preliminarily, it appears a motorcycle heading westbound on East West Highway collided with a car that was making a left turn into a shopping center. The rider was thrown from the motorcycle. The motorcycle then crashed into four pedestrians who were standing on the sidewalk at the crosswalk waiting to cross the street.

All four pedestrians, one man and three children, suffered injuries. Alejandro Santos died at a hospital a short time later. The adult's injuries are considered life-threatening. Of the two surviving children, one suffered critical injuries and the second suffered non-life threatening injuries. The motorcycle rider also suffered non-life threatening injuries. The car's driver suffered minor injuries.

Preliminarily, speed on the part of the motorcycle rider appears to be a factor.

The collision remains under investigation.
