POCOMOKE CITY, Md. - A baseball legend surprised students at an Eastern Shore high school Wednesday.
Cal Ripken Jr. made a surprise visit to Pocomoke High after students there started a social media campaign inviting the 'Iron Man' to speak at their graduation.
Ripken couldn't make it to the ceremony, so instead he made the unexpected visit.
"It was very creative. I haven't been the target of that sort of campaign before," Ripken told WBOC.com.
"I was honored and I was flattered, and my first instinct was yeah let's try to do this," he said. The principal of Pocomoke High School, Annette Wallace, told FOX 5 that only she and a few other staff members knew of his visit in advance. Wallace said she gathered the students and advised them to make one last try to connect with the baseball star using their #WeWantCal social media push. Ripken then made his surprise entrance.
Ripken spent the day talking baseball and discussing the idea of embracing changes that come with graduating.
He took pictures with everyone in the senior class and with the school's baseball and softball teams.
