Suspects in custody, schools lift 'lock-ins' after Alexandria bank robbery

- Police say two suspects are in custody after an armed robbery at an Alexandria bank prompted emergency 'lock-ins' at five area schools.

Authorities responded to a PNC bank in the 800 block of North Washington Street at around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. Two armed men were said to have stolen cash from the bank.

Following the robbery, students at five nearby schools-- George Washington Middle School, Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and Technology, Maury Elementary, Charles Barrett Elementary School, and Mount Vernon Community School – were placed under 'lock-in' or about an hour. No one was allowed to enter or exit the buildings during this time, however, classes were not interrupted.

The 'lock-ins' lasted until about 11:30 a.m. when police announced the arrests of the two suspects.

It is unclear what charges to the suspects will face.
