Will You Eat There? Persimmon

We are helping get you ready for the weekend as our own Will Thomas is on the hunt for memorable meals all across our region.

Bethesda was our destination this week and we have been asking you to tweet us the name of a restaurant to feature so we could share that restaurant's story with everyone.

We want to be clear that we are not "reviewing" the food. But we are here to get you answers to five basic questions, and most of all, have you answering the most important question: Will you eat there?

This week's nomination was Persimmon located along Wisconsin Avenue.

Chef and owner Damian Salvatore grew up in Bethesda and has worked in some of the region's top restaurants.

Nineteen years ago, he opened Persimmon with his wife Stephanie. They vividly remember the day they signed the lease because it was the same day they found out she was pregnant with their son Kevin.

So what's on the menu?

"My chef, Elmy and I, we just kind of come up with things that inspire us," said Salvatore. "We touch on a lot of cuisines. We have a little bit of Asian, we have a lot of French influence, we have some Latin American influence."

He also said, "The bouillabaisse is kind of a bistro standard. We got some great short ribs which are awesome. Some mashed potatoes with it."

So how much does it cost?

"Lunch is $10 to $20," said manager Phil Solomon. "Happy hour is $3 to $10 and dinner is $12 to $34.

Persimmon offers half price wine on Tuesdays and a daily dinner special: three courses for $33.

"It's reopened since I was here last so I thought let's try the new version," one customer told us.

"Well, I remember the food was always great before," said her tablemate. "So far, so good."

"We love the food," said another customer. "The food is about the best in Bethesda."

"To make a reservation, you can go online to persimmonrestaurant.com or you can give us a ring on the phone at (301) 654-9860 or you can also go to opentable.com and find Persimmon Restaurant," said general manager Megan Darnall.

So how is the scene? We went directly to the customers for this one.

"It is unpretentious, but the food is great."

"I've never been here before and my client indicated this is a fabulous restaurant, the food is marvelous and the wait staff is fantastic."

"Great service, good food, it's quick, you can't miss."

What is the must have here? We ask every restaurant to pick one item.

"It's a rack of lamb with roasted pecans, with demi-glace and comes with side of potato gratin," said sous chef Elmy Lemus.

"It's a little bit of old and a little bit of new," said Salvatore. "It's barbeque rack of lamb."

The regulars love it and so did our photographer Mark.

Persimmon has been right there on Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda for 16 years. They renovated last year to freshen things up.

Now, where do we go next week? Salvatore threw a dart on our map and Washington D.C. is now our new target.
