Adams Morgan Safeway reopens after previously closed due to food violations

WASHINGTON - An Adams Morgan Safeway has reopened after it was previously closed by the D.C. Department of Health due to food violations.

On Wednesday morning the D.C. Department of Health ordered the closure and by Thursday evening the store was reopened.

Safeway released the following statement Thursday evening to FOX 5:

"Following successful completion of a follow-up inspection by the DC Department of Health, our Safeway store in Adams Morgan has reopened. Store cleanliness is of the utmost importance to us, and the issues found yesterday at this store did not meet our company's standards.

Our team worked hard overnight and throughout the day to ensure the issues were fully addressed, and all areas have been cleaned and sanitized.

We apologize for the inconvenience to our customers, and commit to doing our best to ensure this issue does not reoccur."

A report released by the department outlines violations found inside of the Safeway, one of those violations includes, "mice droppings cited underneath the hot bar display case and downstairs in the basement behind the shelving."

Safeway has released the following statement to FOX 5:

"Safeway takes very seriously the health of our customers and the conditions of our stores. We are working closely with the DC Department of Health to remediate the concerns they discovered in their inspection yesterday. The store was immediately closed, and our team is working to address the issues quickly and completely. We apologize for the inconvenience to our customers. We will continue to work with representatives of the DC Department of Health to reopen the store as quickly as possible."

The Safeway is located at 1747 Columbia Road NW, and a sign outside of the store says that Pharmacy customers can pick their prescriptions up at the Safeway pharmacy store located at 3830 Georgia Avenue NW, Washington, D.C. 20011.
